Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions parents ask about baby weight and growth charts

According to WHO standards, the normal birth weight is between 2.5 kg and 4.0 kg, with 3.3 kg being the median for boys and 3.2 kg for girls. Indian newborns often weigh between 2.5–3.5 kg, which is slightly lower than the global average due to genetic factors — and the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) considers this normal.

A baby weighing less than 2.5 kg at birth is classified as Low Birth Weight (LBW) and may need extra monitoring. Use the calculator above to check your baby's exact birth weight percentile.
At 5 months, the WHO median weight is 7.5 kg for baby boys and 6.9 kg for baby girls. The healthy normal range (15th–85th percentile) is:
  • Boys: 6.7 kg – 8.4 kg
  • Girls: 6.1 kg – 7.8 kg

If your 5-month-old's weight falls within this range, their growth is on track. For Indian babies, the normal weight may be 200–300g lower, which is often still healthy. Enter your baby's details in the calculator above for a personalised result.
Here are the ideal (median) weights from the WHO baby weight chart by month:

Baby Boy Weight (WHO Median): Newborn 3.3 kg → 3M: 6.4 kg → 6M: 7.9 kg → 9M: 8.9 kg → 12M: 9.6 kg → 18M: 10.9 kg → 24M: 12.2 kg

Baby Girl Weight (WHO Median): Newborn 3.2 kg → 3M: 5.8 kg → 6M: 7.3 kg → 9M: 8.2 kg → 12M: 8.9 kg → 18M: 10.2 kg → 24M: 11.5 kg

These are medians — half of healthy babies weigh more and half weigh less. For the full detailed baby weight chart by month, including percentile ranges, visit our main guide.
The WHO median for a 6-month-old is 7.9 kg (boys) and 7.3 kg (girls). For Indian babies, the typical average is usually 200–400g lower, placing it around:
  • Indian baby boy at 6 months: ~7.0–7.5 kg
  • Indian baby girl at 6 months: ~6.5–7.0 kg

This difference is largely attributed to genetics and maternal nutrition, and is considered normal by the Indian Academy of Pediatrics. However, if your baby's weight is below the 3rd percentile on the WHO chart, consult your paediatrician regardless of ethnicity.
Baby weight gain by month varies with age. According to WHO guidelines:
  • 0–3 months: ~700–900 grams/month
  • 4–6 months: ~500–600 grams/month
  • 7–9 months: ~300–400 grams/month
  • 10–12 months: ~200–300 grams/month
  • After 12 months: ~150–250 grams/month

These are average figures. If your baby consistently gains less than these amounts over multiple months, consult your doctor. Our calculator above automatically computes your baby's average monthly gain when you enter birth weight.
